Theater Director Forced Out for Supporting California’s Prop 8

“Liberal tolerance has reared its ugly head once again, driving a good man out of show business when it was learned that his religious convictions caused him to support California’s Proposition 8, which protects marriage from politically motivated defilement:

Scott Eckern, the Sacramento theater director whose political donation in support of California’s Prop. 8 ban on same-sex marriage has become a lightning rod in the debate over gay rights, resigned today [Wednesday]. He said he wanted to protect the California Musical Theatre, his artistic home since 1984, from further controversy.

Word of Eckern’s $1,000 donation — publicly reported under state elections law — spread rapidly on the Internet late last week, and Eckern drew criticism from some prominent stage artists…

…who blew gaskets at the notion of anyone in theater not toeing the politically correct line, raising such a firestorm that he felt called upon to quit.

Laments Eckern:

I am disappointed that my personal convictions have cost me the opportunity to do what I love the most.

In penance for his sin against the Church of Moonbattery, Eckert has agreed to donate $1,000 to the Human Rights Campaign, a homosexual advocacy group.”

  1. Not true.
A civil right granted by the Supreme Court of California has been stripped away by a proposition based solely on lies and misinformation.
People have been hurt deeply and are reacting with anger.

Mr. Eckern chose to resign. I wish he hadn’t.
No one has forced any beliefs on Scott Eckern. They have rejected his choice to force his beliefs on others. He has no need to accept anything contrary to his beliefs. Most in the theatre are very upset Scott resigned. That need not have happened. But people will no longer sit back and allow discrimination. Of course intimidation and Black-listing are wrong. Just as wrong as when the churches strong-armed members to donate and vote for this bigoted proposition. People are hurt and angry. And for what? A proposition based on lies and fear-mongering.

No one is threatening marriage or children, no one is attacking churches. It is the churches actively struggling to deny a group of Americans their civil and human rights. The churches are the aggressors here. (But can we pause for a moment to imagine what the “churches'” millions of dollars could have done for the poor in our country. What it could have meant to sick and hungry children living in poverty – if only their efforts followed the teachings of Jesus Christ and not the bigotries of shallow leaders. But they chose instead to promote hate and fear of an enemy that doesn’t exist.)
Please don’t tell me “the people have spoken.” If women’s rights had been put up for men to vote on they would still be “property.”
If civil rights for African-Americans had been put on a ballot they would have advanced nowhere. Civil rights are not to be voted on. Human rights are not opinion.
This is discrimination. It is unAmerican, unConstitutional.
And NO ONE can yet explain how it is a threat to anyone else’s marriage. How in the world does it have anything to do with someone else’s religion?
Everyone can hold to their beliefs and religious convictions, but you cannot force those beliefs on others – not in America.

This is not about people exercising their religious convictions.
This is about forcing those convictions on others!
There can be no second-class Americans.

  2. The rule of law. Elections. Not thuggery. What say you about the violence and threats? Freedom fighters? Please….you fail to address the same violence and conduct, the Left always freaks about. Address it or shut the fuck up!

I have written to Jim and extended my sincere apology for my crudeness and stupid behavior. I let my frustrations get the best of my decency and failed to engage in the very temperment that is needed to resolve the great divide. Jim did not deserve that.

  3. Oh my. Such “non-violent, non-threatening, non-thuggish” language.
I did in fact address the anger being expressed. Read it again.
Now please address the constant attacks by “religious” groups on a group of Americans wanting only equality. Address the hatred, address the lies, address the fear-mongering.
Address it or ,.. well, I neither think nor speak like that.
    Have a pleasant life.

  4. I am equal. All men are equal.
That was the entire point to my comment. You misrepresent the facts.

  5. Hi swittersb,
I completely understand. There is so much anger and hurt going around. But I know if we really talk it out God will lead us all to understand his Will better.
May the Lord bless you here, and welcome you there.
