http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPd4yk0x-eg&eurl=http://www.rightpundits.com/?p=2018 (Palin a Pig)
“Insiders explain that Obama is attempting to start a high-risk war against Palin. The correct approach for McCain-Palin is not to allow themselves to be dragged into a fight about sexism in which she could sound like a whiner. Let the media do its job with Obama’s rather foolish statement.”
“Calling Sarah Palin a pig was apparently no accident. Obama’s people whisper that is a new tactic, perhaps one of desperation but it is calculated to upset McCain’s momentum. Obama will attempt to drag McCain into a sexism versus racism war. Watch for that approach in the coming days, as the campaign will bring race back into the election.”
Think of this…trying to infuse race into the contest as a tactic. How bizarre. He is really afraid of a VP choice. Biden was out there today making the same verbal gaffe’s. These two are running scared. Very funny.
Once again, the intellectual integrity and classless twit…I won’t give him any credit for being decent but misguided….he has shown he is a pretender; an arrogant, empty suit.
“You can put lipstick on a pig,” Obama declared. “It’s still a pig.” (Palin)
No mention of Palin. But the audience roared and jumped to its feet.
Obama paused to take in the applause and then moved on to another (also overused) metaphor.
“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change,” he began. “It’s still gonna stink after eight years.” (McCain=Bush)
Desparate. WWOD? Start a smear campaign. Show you real toughness while picking on a woman. Must be why Hillary didn’t fair well. The obvious choice to guarantee victory and he passed. Such hatred of women..white women? Hard to say. It is easy to see and say now…he is an idiot. See how quick I have learned to call names (my online training from the Leftist blogosphere).

i disagree — palin is trowing out the attacks, and the second the democrats respond, the republicans act as if they god shot.

Hence, the problem: the Left calls names. The Right criticizes character and policy. We are truly divided. I laugh at your assertion..then pause….how are we becoming this way?

I understand that Obama’s bodyguards have been given fresh pictures of Gov Palin’s husband.
Without bodyguards, Obama would not have an opportunity to make such comments about Mr Palin’s wife twice.

Palin is a religious extremist pig + lipstick? No, it’s worse than that.
Palin = Bush + Lipstick + Even more extremism
McCain = Bush + Bad temper

Obama=Ayers, Wright, Rezko, Chicago Machine, Annenberg funds. See I don’t have any answers for any of those associations, but they are significantly more important than anything the Left concocts. I will take his temper and a set of balls over an arrogant man that has finally sold out and allows all this to take place…oh well…the divide is established. Guess we know who you and yours will spend the next stint smearing and HATING.

the expression “you can put lipstick on a pig, and it’s still a pig” is an old southern expression . . . it means you can try to dress up ideas and use euphemisms, but the underlying idea still stinks, and in this case, the “pig” would have referred to mccain’s record of siding with the establishment, having lobbyists manage his campaign, even though he promotes himself as a maverick (the word maverick being the “lipstick”)…

Putting lipstick on a pig per the Urban Dictionary:
“A term used by many, generally in reference to someone who may be trying to make something or someone look appealing or attractive when it quite clearly will not work, or will only deceive the dumbest of people.
Car salesmen are generally good at “putting lipstick on a pig” because they are always selling unroadworthy buckets of crap and try and hide their crapfulness by tarting them up.”
Obama is too smart for the Nasty Dumb Right!
Comment by anonymous — September 10, 2008 @ 5:37 PM |
The common meaning is well known. As he stood up there mumbling as usual without the prompter he used it against Palin and the old fish in the paper against McCain. Very obvious and insiders say it was intentional. That aside…his base stood and cheered becuz they knew what he meant. Also, really here, the hypocrisy…any innuendo re race toward Obama would be seized upon and pushed to the hilt by the Nasty Dumb Left. Obama isn’t as smart as I had thought. He is smooth and charming…but really a car salesman reference or traveling elixir salesman is more apt. Appearance over Substance. I can imagine how stressful it is when the Messiah and his fervent followers cannot believe an old Moderate and an upstart woman are kicking his ass. How funny. Win or lose, the Left’s contempt and arrogance is palpable. All that flowery rhetoric about diversity, tolerance, equality….just talk…like Obama

I must admit, I’m a bit confused by the feigned outrage. The only way you can get to Obama calling Palin a pig is through extreme hyperbole.
First of all Obama specifically call McCain by NAME, not once but twice, immediately before he made the statement. To me, you’d have a better argument if you were contend that Obama call McCane a Pig. Though, I think that would also be a stretch. Second, Obama specifically referred to McCane’s hackneyed assertion that he is NOW an AGENT of CHANGE.
Thus my confusion, particularly in light of the fact that Gov. Palin has for the past eight days been referring to herself (and other hockey moms) in a most unflattering way. You all do realize that a female “Pitbull” (a dog) may be appropriately referred to as a BIT*H. Now that’s a direct comparison out of Gov. Palin’s own mouth. Now I don’t think she meant it that way but one could easily draw different conclusion.
If your women and you are really looking to be really offended, then take a look at this article from the Tucson Citizen http://big.assets.huffingtonpost.com/tucsongorilla.pdfin

This is laughable. Using derogatory terms for women is the province of John McCain. McCain once called his own wife a C#nt in front of reporters. Palin compared herself to a pit bull in lipstick. Sorry, but a pit bull doesnt play the victim every time they think a comment is directed at them.
Comment by Mug — September 11, 2008 @ 1:10 AM |
Okay, the Palin-McCain ticket has a point. She compared herself to a dog, not a pig. BTW, I understand that pigs are smarter than dogs.

Evidently McCain did call his wife the name that “Mug” described. He also, in the same sentence, called her a trollop (just as bad, although quasi-archaic.) On the plus side, it was in 1992, and people do change. I suppose one of the unanswered questions was whether he was right.

As an Independent, I wanted to wait until the debates to truly make up my mind. That’s not to say I wasn’t already leaning away from Obama. However, the Obama/Biden campaign’s actions since the announcement of Palin has been disappointing, to say the least. I thought Obama was this highly educated, Harvard law professor with the gift of oratory genius.
You cannot tell me that a man of Obama’s alleged “pedigree” (don’t forget his remark about not looking like the guys on U.S. currency??) innocently used a turn of phrase that would immediately be linked to Palin the second it rolled off his lips. Less than one week after Palin joked about hockey moms and pitbulls, he uses a turn of phrase that is covertly referring to her. Now, we all know that he isn’t calling her a “pig,” per se, but he also knows exactly what he is doing. Does this mean the GOP can use turns of phrase like — “pot calling the kettle black,” or “the issues are black and white,” or “the liberals want to enslave the American people into Socialism,” etc.
For the first time, I think (no, I know), the “Annointed One” is scared sh-less. He’s supposed to be the One, not some Alaskan hick. He’s the “rock star,” not some “pig” with lipstick. He is scratching and clawing just to make the news at this point. Seriously, the Koolaid is getting a little watered down!
I just sent my donation to McCain/Palin!
Comment by FL-Independent — September 10, 2008 @ 12:24 PM |
As a Republican for over 30 years, I am applaud at what McCain has done. The statement was obviously not towards Palin, as Obama was speaking about McCain and his policies closely resembling the policies of Bush, but trying to wrap it up as something “new” and better. I am not agreeing with Obama, but I see the point he was trying to make (although I disagree). The McCain campaign is clearly trying to take his words out of context. I would not vote for Obama to save my life, but all of these cheap shots are making me think twice about voting for McCain.
Comment by Greg — September 10, 2008 @ 1:13 PM |
I think this underhanded attack of Obama’s is even worse than we expected. Sarah is a babe, in no way can she be construed as a “pig.” I believe that this is a dem-attack against McCain making reference to the oft-cited and totally bogus rumors of his cross-dressing. Mr. Obama needs to apologize to Mr. McCain for insinuating that he wears women’s clothing for the sheer enjoyment of it.
Comment by Viva Zapata — September 10, 2008 @ 2:38 PM |
Hey – who brought up all this PIG business anyway? I’m really saddened by McCain’s most recent actions. He USED to be different, but he has become BUSH, using Bush-like tactics. The expression about “pigs wearing lipstick” is as old as the hills, and everybody knows it.
Shame on you John McCain. Oh, but I guess you DID spend 5 years as a prisoner. That makes everything OK. (Maybe you were just an Incompetent Pilot)???

Sarah Palin is a 5 line wonder. One of them is a half truth, and the other 4 are down right lies. Obama wasn’t even using the pig analogy toward a person, instead it was about McCain’s claim to be the agent of change. It was McCain who actually used the pig analogy against Hillary, a real live woman. Who is the sexist here? McCain knows he can’t win on the issues. So he’s decided to run in the mud. Shameful
Comment by Dan — September 10, 2008 @ 6:50 PM |
I would say the old fish still stinks after 8 years is really where the problem with Obama’s statements are. He was obviously referring the Sen. McCain as an old fart. Old people smell funny (some do at least) so he is trying to say McCain is an old man who is going to smell really bad in about 8 years. You guys are idiots not to see that!
Comment by The Butcher — September 10, 2008 @ 7:15 PM |
McSenile used the same “pig” phrase more than three times. Failin needs to go back to her family if she can’t handle the campaign trail. The republicans did achieve what they wanted to, not needing to address the REAL issues of the Presidential election. Oh and Failin and McShame are full of lies , she did not sell the plane on ebay, or make a profit on it. It’s too bad her son isn’t in her womb, she would believe in protecting him, instead of sending him off to his possible death. Maybe she can go celebrate his becoming a man by clubbing a baby seal, what a great woman. Oh, and don’t tell me how horrible I am for not supporting the troops, I do, I just don’t believe in the illegal war.

Geez, Obama didn’t call anyone a pig or a fish. Here’s what he said:
==========
“John McCain says he’s about change, too — except for economic policy, health care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove-style politics,” Mr. Obama told his supporters here. “That’s just calling the same thing something different.”
With a laugh, he added: “You can put lipstick on a pig; it’s still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change; it’s still going to stink after eight years.”
==========
“That’s just calling the same thing something different” was in reference to economic policy, health care policy, tax policy, etc., not Palin. You see the obvious connection from that line to the lipstick line. Clearly the “lipstick on a pig” comment is just another way to say the same thing – McCain can call his policies a change, but they aren’t, they are just dressed up as change.
Anybody who is claiming the statement is calling Palin a pig is either ignorant (didn’t actually read what Obama wrote) or fervently partisan, trying to turn everything Obama says into a tool to attack him.
Which are you swittersb?
Comment by Steve Anderson — September 12, 2008 @ 3:59 PM |
Well, Steve I hope I am not ignorant and I am partisan, no doubt like you. But, I know Obama is no dummy and double nuanced statements are easy enough to do and then deny. Of course, he did not directly do it. He used what he knew had already been used..hence giving himself and out…and most importantly, everyone there knew what he meant as they wildly cheered at the nuanced slam, casually attached to the seemingly genuine comment about policy. Perhaps you do not understand the sophistication of handlers pumping all manner of thought out responses to Barack. It is amazing to me that you can ignore all the baggage Barack carries and still worry about this so many days later. Paritsanship makes us all a bit blind and looking toward the other’s camp for fault. Thanks for writing.
Comment by swittersb — September 12, 2008 @ 4:10 PM |
Let me see if I follow your logic. Because the crowd responded to Obama’s remarks in a strongly positive way, that means Obama called Palin a pig, because the crowd would never respond that way to what Obama really said – is that right?
If so, it’s a ridiculous position.
Palin wasn’t the subject of anything Obama was talking about – McCain’s policy plans were. So, the only way you could think of Obama’s words as a nuance slam against her is if you somehow pull her into it while ignoring the actual topic – McCain’s policies. For the crowd to understand Obama’s words the way you claim they did, they’d all have to do that simultaneously. That level of free association is a bit more than unlikely, don’t you think? I would say it’s downright impossible.
More importantly, though, it’s exciting that Obama is calling McCain on his claiming one thing while doing another. That’s why the crowd cheered. They didn’t respond to some non-existent slam against Palin, they responded to a clear point. They didn’t need a “nuanced slam” to have something to cheer for.
Look, if Obama called Palin a pig, I would be outraged, Instead, I’m just astounded at the depths people will go to twist his words.
My hope is that people that aren’t blinded by their partisan beliefs will see what Obama said and say, “Gee, he didn’t call anybody a pig, he just said McCain’s policies are not changing anything – why would these people claim he said something he didn’t say? Don’t they have a valid response to his points?”. All this fuss will, hopefully, just drive home Obama’s point more.
Comment by Steve Anderson — September 12, 2008 @ 8:00 PM |
I think a more accurate animal-kingdom comparison for Palin might be one of those floor dwelling, oceanic fish that lures its prey by falsely presenting itself as beneficial, then devours it when it gets too close.
The recent Wall Street Journal piece exemplifies how the Republican party does this with small town voters. They craft rhetoric that makes them seem like good old small town folks with those values. Then, once they’re elected, small towns are left to erode economically.
Soldiers stationed overseas have given 65% more money to Obama’s campaign than McCains. That’s because most of them are from small urban areas, are smart and they get that. We should support our troops and get the Republicans out.
Farmers are also endorsing Obama way more than McCain for this reason too: Republicans talk up the hard-working, farming-life values to steal votes, obtain office and then continue to help the large corporations at the expense of soldiers, farmers, residents of small towns and, as they always have, the urban poor.
Let’s get Obama in there and show the wealthy oil executives and defense contractors their time has come and gone. We get the Republican trick and we’re not going get hoodwinked by it again.
Comment by Jon — September 13, 2008 @ 7:53 AM |
So, Jon…while you worry about the usual Leftist evil forces….please add to those the oil money Obama is receiving…the fact he endorsed opposition to Prop 4 to halt or contol Pebble Mine in the prisinte headwaters of Bristol Bay, still has not been asked about CAC in Chicago and Resko and the corrupt Chicago Machine…a clear choice of the lesser evil (McCain) chosse..Palin. Oh and the animal analogies are so apt for the Left. Name calling, tantrums, amazing childishness…a perfect feelings prone Leftist you are……..if I was as classless as you, I would consider appropriate animals for you and yours, but the Demwits already have a mascot–the perfect one: Hee Haw!
